Job Description

Description

Outstanding Opportunity
Located just 20 minutes from downtown San Francisco via BART, the City of Lafayette (pop. 25,000) prides itself on its vibrant downtown, beautiful tree-studded hillsides, and great schools. This position will be part of the team that ensures that the City retains its semi-rural character and “small town” downtown feel.

The Code Enforcement Officer ensures compliance with the City’s municipal, zoning, housing, development, and signage codes. Responsibilities include the authority to cite violators and initiate court proceedings for compliance.  Successful performance of the work requires the frequent use of tact, discretion, and independent judgment, knowledge of departmental and City activities, and extensive staff and public contact.

This is a challenging job in a great city!  If you want to work with a team of dedicated, energetic, and fun professionals, and have excellent customer service skills, and a desire to enhance the community’s quality of life, we strongly encourage you to apply!

The Position Information

The Code Enforcement position is part of the Engineering services Department and typically performs the following duties:

  • Receive, record, and investigate complaints from the public, staff, and other agencies regarding the violations of the Lafayette Municipal Code.
  • Contact residents, business owners, and others to explain the violations and obtain compliance.
  • Prepare and issue courtesy notices, warning notices, notices of violation, citations, and other correspondence.
  • Coordinate and conduct follow-up abatement procedures.
  • Maintain accurate tracking and documentation of all activities, and produce a variety of reports, memoranda, Public Records Act request responses, and documentation for legal actions.
  • Perform a variety of public relations and outreach work related to assigned activities.
  • Draft and recommend revision to City code enforcement policies, procedures, and standards.

Ideal Candidate

The City is seeking a professional who enjoys working independently as well as in a collaborative environment to manage the City’s code enforcement program.  The candidate will need to be tactful, self-motivated, creative and detail-oriented.  Exceptional communication skills and the ability to accurately document activities are required.  A high level of customer service and initiative are necessary to be successful in this position.  The applicant must have a valid California Driver’s license and be a High school graduate or have obtained a GED.  Possession of a California Code Enforcement Certification and a minimum of two years year experience in code enforcement, zoning, planning, building construction and inspection, or law enforcement is highly desirable.

Benefits

The salary range for the position is $79,848—$111,624. The City also provides an attractive benefits package that includes:

  • A 401-A retirement plan with City-paid monthly contributions of 10% of salary with the option of a 5% match as well as City-paid social security contributions.  The City of Lafayette does not participate in the PERS retirement system.
  • City-subsidizes 95% of health and dental insurance OR you may keep health allowance (equal to 15% of salary) as deferred compensation if you have alternate coverage.
  • 13 paid holidays and up to 25 days of annual vacation, depending on tenure.
  • Challenging, interesting work; opportunities for innovation and creativity; family friendly policies; a flexible work environment; and casual dress.
